Is A Beagle Puppy Right For You?

Beagle puppies are adorable. But you should not pick a dog based on looks alone. If you think you might want to add a beagle puppy to your family, here are some questions to ask yourself  to ensure it will be a good fit.

Do You Have Experience Training Puppies?

Beagles are kind and intelligent dogs, but they can be tough to train. They are very stubborn, and they have very strong instincts that can be tough to move past in training. Experienced trainers can work through these issues, but if you don't have experience training dogs, you may have a tough time with a beagle puppy. If you are otherwise certain this breed is right for you, then you'll want to hire a dog trainer to help you with your beagle puppy.

Do You Want a Dog Who Always Wants to Be Around You?

Beagles are clingy, and not just when they are puppies. They always want to be around their owners, and they become very attached to them. Some people find this charming. It's exactly what they want in a dog. Other people want a dog who can be a bit more independent. If you really want an independent dog, then a beagle puppy may not be your best fit.

How Do You Feel About Howling and Baying?

Most beagles don't really bark in the traditional sense. Instead, they tend to howl and bay. You can teach your dog not to howl if you start when they are a pup, but most beagles do still howl from time to time, even with good training. If this noise does not bother you, or if you are one of the people who happen to find it charming, then this is a good sign that a beagle pup may be right for you.

Is There Space for the Dog to Exercise?

Beagles are hunting dogs, and their nature is to run — and then run some more. Even though they are small, they need a good space to run. If you have a fenced-in yard, then you may be an ideal beagle puppy owner. If you live near a dog park where your dog can run off-leash, that's another good sign.

Beagle puppies are kind and adorable, but they are not for everyone. If you're patient, have some training experience, have space for the dog to run, and don't mind howling, then you're probably equipped to buy a beagle puppy.
